Grief around Immigration
Moving to a new country can bring hope, opportunity, and new beginnings — but it can
also bring grief. Immigration often involves leaving behind familiar places, loved ones,
routines, language, culture, and a sense of belonging. Even when the move is chosen
willingly, it is possible to deeply miss what has been left behind. Grief around
immigration is not always obvious. It can show up as loneliness, guilt, homesickness,
anxiety, numbness, or feeling “between worlds.” Some people feel pressure to stay
positive or grateful, which can make it harder to acknowledge the emotional impact of
such a major life change. Yet grief and gratitude can exist together.
CBT with Nicole can help by creating space to gently explore thoughts and emotions
without judgement. When we are struggling, it is easy to become caught in self-critical
thinking such as “I should be coping better” or “I made the wrong decision.” Learning to
recognise and challenge these thoughts can help reduce emotional overwhelm and
build self-compassion. Adjusting to a new environment takes time. Staying connected
to meaningful traditions, building supportive relationships, and allowing yourself to
grieve what you have lost are all important parts of healing. You do not need to rush the
process. With support, it is possible to create a sense of home while still honouring
where you came from.
