Anxiety around Politics
Political news can feel impossible to escape. Headlines, social media debates, and
constant updates can leave many people feeling overwhelmed, worried, angry, or
helpless. For some, anxiety around politics can affect sleep, concentration,
relationships, and overall wellbeing. If this sounds familiar, you are certainly not alone.
Our brains are naturally wired to pay attention to potential threats, especially during
times of uncertainty. When political events feel unpredictable or emotionally charged,
it can trigger a cycle of overthinking, doomscrolling, and imagining worst-case
scenarios. While staying informed is important, constantly absorbing distressing
information can leave the nervous system feeling stuck in a state of alert.
CBT With Nicole encourages us to notice how our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours
interact. For example, repeatedly checking the news may temporarily reduce
uncertainty, but over time it can increase anxiety and make it harder to switch off
mentally. Setting gentle boundaries around media consumption and focusing on what
is within your control can help create a greater sense of balance. It is also important to
make space for rest, connection, and activities that ground you in the present moment.
Caring for your mental health does not mean you do not care about the world — it
simply means you are caring for yourself too.
